Prepare to be mesmerized

Prepare to be mesmerized

The first newsletter of 2024 begins with new photography by Tuan Pham, which our own Sandra Capellaro calls “mesmerizing.”

While viewing Tuan’s work, I encourage you to accompany your exhalations with a low tuneless hum, allowing your breath to elongate. With each pairing of photo and breath, I find myself dropping into a state of restful aliveness.

We may also cultivate our vitality by gathering together to investigate positive models for being in relationship with ourselves and others. Like waves on the shore, our individual efforts are magnified by the collective endeavor.

The magic and wonder of being human, even if we exist in an imperfect world, can sustain us in hopeful ways. Please join in this inquiry at one of our 2024 retreats. Discoveries await…

In exploration,
Elaine

Barbara Mindell in words and paintings

Barbara Mindell in words and paintings

Dear Friends,

Drum roll, please.

The Watermark Arts Creative Team is exceedingly pleased to bring you Transformation, the 2023 Watermark Arts Journal! Painter and longtime Continuum teacher Barbara Mindell’s article “The Process of Transformation and the Myth of Paralysis” is featured, along with each of the paintings she completed in her lifetime.

We express our sincere gratitude to Barbara’s partner, Dennis Matthies, for transferring Barbara’s archive to Elaine, giving us the ability to share Barbara’s deeply embodied understanding of Continuum with you. Her wisdom, vibrantly expressed in words and images, is a true gift for all to receive. Hanna Wise Heiting’s poem “Death is,” written as a memorial tribute, gives considerable insight into Barbara’s passionate nature and transports us into a life well lived.

Creative Director Prue Jeffries is commended for her conception of the Watermark Arts Journal – a vehicle through which it is possible to share longform somatic writing and extensive collections of art. In this fifth issue, Prue has once again excelled at creating an aesthetically compelling publication through her artful design.

Along with Elaine, editors Sandra Capellaro and Rori Smith complete the team bringing the journal to you. We encourage you to settle in and absorb this treasure trove of somatic understanding.

As a young adult Barbara was in a life-threatening accident, which made for many challenges throughout her life. She was a true dweller on the threshold. She met every experience with total participation and always with great style. In these challenging days, may Barbara’s spirit continue to guide us.

Wishing you well this holiday season,
Elaine, Prue, Sandra & Rori

Sharing A Simple Breath

Sharing A Simple Breath

Dear friends,

In this newsletter, we invite you to engage with your breathing as a life defining and enhancing act.

As you read Beth Pettengill Riley’s poem, A Simple Breath, which is interspersed with photographs from dancer Rori Smith’s choreography, become aware of your relationship to your breathing.

Then dive into Moving Like Water, a three-minute participatory video from The Elemental Body that offers approaches to soften bodily holding patterns and liberate your capacity for breathing.

This month we are also announcing the 2024 dates for in-person Continuum retreats so you might begin to allot resources towards attending. These events are opportunities to explore and transform ourselves within community, where breathing, sounding and moving are the terrain that, to quote Beth, “join us – one to another.”

Wishing you a bountiful Autumn,
Elaine

Soothing the Soul with Somatic Art and Retreats

Soothing the Soul with Somatic Art and Retreats

To convey the embodied artistry of our evening performance during the truly wonderful Continuum Retreat at Omega Center for Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, NY, we are sharing the work of gifted photographer Phyllis McCabe.

In this photo essay, we have the opportunity to highlight conversations with dancer/choreographers Megan Bathory-Peeler and Melanie Gambino, whose enduring commitment to Watermark Arts has helped bring many performances to fruition over our near-decade of operation.

A Continuum Immersion is the Fall retreat at the Dharmakaya Center for Wellbeing in Cragsmoor, NY. Located in the tranquil Shawangunk Mountains, this pristine location offers a spacious indoor Meditation Hall and a covered outdoor pavilion as sites for exploration. Please join me for a somatic movement balm for the soul from September 14 (Thursday evening) to September 17 (Sunday lunch).

With appreciation for all the ways you participate in art, somatic practice and community,

Elaine

From Seoul Korea to Rhinebeck NY

From Seoul Korea to Rhinebeck NY

During this season of fertility and growth, art and Continuum are commingling, thriving in so many ways!

Watermark Arts welcomes dance artist Eunmi Kuk from Seoul, whose work is deeply informed by Continuum and Feldenkrais. Learn more about her in this newsletter and see Eunmi perform live at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY on July 5 at 7:30PM during an Evening of Dance, Spoken Word and Poetry: Interdependence in Motion.

Eunmi and fellow performers Megan Bathory-Peeler, Raine Brown, Sandra Capellaro, Kelly Garone, Melanie Gambino and Rori Smith will be traveling to Omega for our annual Continuum retreat July 2 – 7 and you can join them. For many, this retreat is a homecoming – to oneself and to the Continuum community.

At Omega we will explore interdependence through embodied study of universal patterns of growth common to our living world. This is a unique opportunity to practice Continuum with a faculty of eight long-time Continuum teachers leading the workshop as one interconnected network.

With an embrace,

In our community of somatically-informed artists, we generate and share art from an experience of wholeness, endeavoring to decrease forces of fragmentation and isolation.

In the vibrant months ahead, Watermark Arts offers three retreats to experience interconnectedness through the practice of Continuum.

Shantigar Foundation, Rowe MA

July 2 – 7: Interdependence in Motion

Interdependence in Art and Life

Interdependence in Art and Life

Spring is almost here!

In this newsletter, we are happy to feature the interweaving artwork of Deborah Mutschler. Her latest pieces, with sweeping curves that invite the warm breezes of months to come, can be seen below and on her gallery page.

March finds us richly underway in our collaborative planning process for Interdependence in Motion: A Continuum Retreat. Held within the peaceful campus at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY, this annual retreat is a cherished time to soak up the magic of community in nature.

Omega graciously allows us to bring in a large faculty, which this year includes co-organizer Megan Bathory-Peeler, Robin Becker, Ellen Cohen, Melanie Gambino, Bonnie Gintis, Elisabeth Osgood-Campbell and Linda Rabin. Together we love creating explorations and holding space for our precious community of somatic movers. Retreat participants will receive Continuum teachings expressed from each of the faculty’s unique talents and with an overall coherence from this group of eight – an octo-pod!

I believe strongly in the kind of community created in the circle of Continuum and hope you can join us from July 2-7, 2023.

May our paths cross at one of the many activities we have planned for this year,

Elaine

2023 Anniversary Year Celebrations

2023 Anniversary Year Celebrations

Happy New Year,

2023 marks a significant anniversary for me.

Thirty years ago, I met Continuum and fell completely in love.

I knew immediately that I would follow its call – exploring the art and science of being a conscious, moving body. For these past three decades – a large part of my adult life – I have been faithful to Continuum. I have been rewarded with a growing ability to meet the unexpected and the unknown, with healing revelations and more ease in my entire being.

I am beholden to Judi Bachrach, who introduced me to Continuum in 1993. She captured my attention by describing Continuum as a way “to bypass your defenses and connect with your true self.” My study continued with visionary Continuum founder Emilie Conrad, who challenged me to release what stood in my way, to become free to carry Continuum into the world. Susan Harper provided heartfelt support and was an inspiring model on my journey to becoming a Continuum teacher.

My colleagues in the Continuum teaching community are my chosen family. Linda Rabin has been my Continuum soul mate in a decades-long pedagogical dialogue that keeps us engaged and growing. I have been blessed for these many years with extraordinary students, who endlessly inspire me and whose perspectives broaden my understanding of human experience.

2023 will be full of events born of my lifelong abiding passion: bringing people together to experience the transformative capacity of the body. Read on for an overview of the year to come.

Please join me in celebrating nothing less than the unfolding, ongoing miracle of life in vibrant expression.

Wishing you the joy of connection in 2023 – with self, others and nature,
Elaine

As always, I owe endless gratitude to the multi-talented Watermark Arts Creative Team.
