San Falcione Dancescapes #6:”What is Refuge?/Cos’e un Rifugio?”

San Falcione Dancescapes #6: Seeking refuge often lands people in situations almost as difficult as what they are trying to escape… Related in some way was a sculpture of a woman in MUSMA/Matera that got under my skin; I felt her story in my DNA. Recent filming gave me the chance to find out more & to explore some facets of refuge. Photos: Prue Jeffries. A Watermark Arts project in Parco Murgia Timone, Italia.

San Falcione Dancescapes #5: Under the Rock/ Da Sotto la Roccia

San Falcione Dancescapes #5: From “Under the Rock/ Da Sotto la Roccia” duet with Claudia T. Catani & Naomi Walker grew out of a Continuum exploration in “pressing”- into the wood, the stone, & each other – a fortifying activity increasing piezoelectric energy. With this dance I bow to my mentor Emilie Conrad, who said to me many times in the last year of her life, “Elaine, it is time to get out from under your rock.” Thank you Claudia, Naomi & Prue Jeffries who photographed and filmed – all under a very hot Italian sun in the Parco Murgia Timone. A Watermark Arts project.

San Falcione Dancescapes #4: “Communitas” a dance in an earth womb, or natural cave, in the south of Italy, eventually will be a dance art video from Watermark Arts.

At dusk with candles, an experience that nourished me. For years, I have led Continuum workshops in beautifully renovated caves in Matera. For this dance, “Communitas” I wanted to bring together this land of ancient mystery schools with the contemporary, yet timeless, practice of Continuum. Claudia T. Catani, Naomi Walker & me, photos by Prue Jeffries, for Watermark Arts in a natural cave, an earth womb in Parco Murgia Timone. ~ Elaine Colandrea

San Falcione Dancescapes#3: The practice of Continuum has inspired many dances, from me and many others active with Watermark Arts. This is a new project in a southern Italian landscape that is a part of me, that teaches me, and welcomes me home to myself over and over.

San Falcione Dancescapes #2: “Between Stone and Sky,” “Tra Pietra e Cielo,” a Watermark Arts Continuum inspired dance art project in progress in southern Italia, with Naomi Walker, Claudia T. Catani, Elaine Colandrea, & Prue Jeffries, photos.

Curled in fabric sacs, our moving bodies released the scent of thyme from the plants below us, which filled my scent receptors for days. Our spiraling movements mirrored the many white vineyard snails that were climbing up the tall grasses we were embedded with. Emerging slowly, we felt the gentle breeze on our skin, the warmth of the sun filled our pores. Blue sky drew us to our feet where we reveled in exploring air & space; then the stone and soil below us called us to return to the earth. A life cycle…with Naomi Walker, Claudia T. Catani (dancers) and Prue Jeffries (photos/filming.) In the Parco Murgia Timone, Matera, Italia, a land I love, a land I learn from.

San Falcione Dancescapes #1: Teaching and filming in southern Italy

ElaineWatermark Arts in Italy

Elaine Colandrea

After many years in the practice of Continuum, I discovered in myself a longing, not just to make art, but to realize myself and others as living art. It is the artless, unstudied quality of the natural world in moment-by-moment human experience that has been revealed to me in the movement of Continuum.

Now, writing to you while teaching and filming in southern Italy, I am surrounded by a landscape that also calls me to this deepest longing. Perhaps this stirs something in you, too. If so, I invite you to partake of three new offerings from Watermark Arts in our latest Mailchimp issue.
