World Dance Alliance Conference

AdminPast Events, Past Workshops

The World Dance Alliance Conference will be held this year virtually, April 22 – 29. This year’s theme is Ecologies of and through the Body.

Watermark Arts will be participating in the conference with a workshop entitled  “The Elemental Nature of the Body: A Continuum Workshop.”

Craft an embodied understanding of the four elements, Air, Earth, Fire, and Water, through the somatic awareness practice of Continuum. Continuum breath, sound, and fluid movement slow perception, so that sensations from deep within our living tissues emerge, leading to a sense of wholeness and belonging with nature.

By investigating the vital chemistry of all life, we can move with empowerment, creativity, and courage, manifesting meaningful contributions in the world.

We will tune into our bodies through guided breathing and sounding practices. This preparation will lead to the exploration of movement patterns from nature – spiral and waves, folding and unfolding, branching, and more. This class is appropriate for and inclusive of all bodies and all levels of movement experience.

What is Refuge?

Additionally the site specific dance film, What is Refuge? Che Cose il Refugio?, was accepted into the World Dance Alliance Online Concert Program. This collaboration between dancer Elaine Colandrea, film maker Prue Jeffries and composer Morena Boschetto examines the timely concept of refuge. Filmed in a Unesco World Heritage site in Matera, Italy.

The Elemental Nature of the Body: Somatic Movement Summit V
July 19th to 24th, 2020, Omega Institute
Rhinebeck, NY

Choosing a path of opening in the face of global crisis and personal adversity begins a journey inward to connect with the most primordial movements of nature and with the elemental self to reveal our inherent biological capacity for innovation.

Through the somatic awareness practice of Continuum, this restorative retreat investigates the vital chemistry of all life. Embodying the qualities of earth, air, fire and water awakens the body’s fluid capacity for healing, insight, and creative engagement.

Meeting our intrinsic selves through movement, breath and sound leads to a sense of wholeness, refreshment, nourishment and belonging with the natural world. From this inner space of knowing, we can access the empowerment, creativity and courage that lead to manifesting meaningful contributions in the world.

Movement sessions, periods of silence, and opportunities for artful expression, personal reflection, and community exchange combine to offer a fresh model of alive, sensory presence pertinent to educators, health care practitioners, artists, activists and all who wish to learn skills for life-force growth.

Elaine Colandrea with Megan Bathory-Peeler, Cory Blake, Ellen Cohen, Suzanne Wright Crain, Melanie Gambino, Bonnie Gintis, Rebecca Lawson, Elisabeth Osgood-Campbell, Linda Rabin, Kori Tolbert, Lauren Wadsworth, and Sharon Weil.

Somatic Movement Summit: Notes from past participants

ElainePast Events

“I’ve attended the last three Somatic Movement Summit retreats at Omega led by Elaine and an esteemed group of Continuum movement practitioners and teaching guides. I’ve left each retreat feeling the most vibrant and alive I’ve ever felt. The week-long series feeds my soul, my inspiration and my passion, for the year and beyond. Being among women and men pioneering and passionate in this field has brought me so much personal joy, growth, and support, in my being and on my path. Peers who have attended with me have expressed that it feels almost like going to camp and seeing old friends. The environment is just so rich and nurtured with love, creativity, joy, compassion, vibrancy… I wouldn’t miss it!” – Nicole Faustini, Movement Educator, Havenview Pilates & Movement, Nyack, NY

“It has been my pleasure to attend the Somatic Movement Summit retreats for the last several years. I have experienced peaks of insight, a felt sense of my physical interior life, and both tranquility and deep emotion at various moments during this special time away from everyday life. The expert group of teachers, following a common vision for the week, is wonderful at inviting the attendees to find and explore what is alive within them. Omega is a comfortable and sheltering environment, offering a lovely, natural setting for this experience. The people attracted to this work tend to be soulful and friendly, which helps to integrate the week and lead to new connections.” — Ray Greenberg, Owner, Yoga and Hanna Somatic Education Instructor

“Being able to attend the Somatic Movement Summit as a family offers us a shared language that nourishes and inspires us. We feel support pulsing through all of the teachers and participants, and this gives us a reset of connectivity that carries us back into the world. So deeply thankful!!!” – Noelle, Marc, Talia & Jonah, New Paltz, NY

Somatic Movement Summit: The Creativity of Health, Mirroring Nature

ElaineNewsletters, Past Events, Past Workshops

Health is not a stable state. Living at the center of a complex and changing set of circumstances, how do we nourish our well-being? The somatic movement practice of Continuum teaches us to engage more willingly, effectively, and artfully with our circumstances. In sequences of breath, sound, and movement, Continuum brings us back to the fluid nature that runs through the natural world, encouraging us to remain curious and engaged.

This retreat, with focused movement sessions throughout the week as well as a period of silence, fosters the integration of Continuum practice into intentional art making, verbal expression and core experience of the world.

Retracing in movement the evolutionary journey that has brought humankind to this place and time, we gain a powerful perspective and recover key elements of our cosmic, fluid, and terrestrial origins, which become resources for our current personal and cultural situations.

The somatic skills shared in this workshop are of benefit to anyone interested in embodied engagement with issues of health and well-being. Continuing education (CE) credits for bodyworkers. Childcare available.
